After reading the other reviews I was appalled! I have nothing but praise for Dr.Hoffman! My Australian Shepherd suddenly went blind about 4 years ago. We went to an emergency vet and our vet in town, spent about $500 just to be referred to Eye Care for Animals. We went to see Dr. Hoffman, after she personally called me to discuss what the percentage for him regaining his eye sight would be, before making the 2 hour drive. When we got to her office, I was very impressed at how organized they were. I didn't have to wait but 10 minutes to be seen. The actual time with the doctor was about 10-15 minutes but she will spend as much time to answer questions as you need. I never felt rushed or that she didn't want to be bothered by my questions! She treated my dog with compassion and love throughout the entire visit. As far as the 'quick eye exam with a magnifying glass', this is what she does! She is a professional and expert in eyes. She knows what she is looking for when it comes to eyes. I never once thought that she was guessing at what could be wrong with him. The only guessing was with the dosage of medication that would work for him! He regaining his eye sight within 3 days! He has lost his eye sight 4 different times over the last 4 years due to an autoimmune disease but regains his eye sight every time we go back to see her. Maybe it is the surgical costs that are giving Dr. Hoffman bad feedback (I personally have not had to have surgery on my dog and cannot comment on the area) but as an eye doctor for animals, I would highly recommend her services and facility!

Awesome facility and staff. My experience here was impeccable. I honestly don't understand how everyone else has such a bad experience when I had such a wonderful experience. My dog had an eye ulcer - the 2nd time in 2 months. The previous time wasn't as serious, so I took my dog to my usual vet. The 2nd time, there were more serious concerns, so I went to see the eye specialist at Eye Care for Animals. Both times, I had to take my dog to the Eagle Rock emergency pet clinic first. My emergency vet contacted Dr Hoffman at Eye Care for Animals to see if my dog needed to be seen by her immediately. Dr Hoffman looked at pictures sent by the emergency vet via email, and determined that it can wait until the next business day (2 days later) and deferred to the emergency vet for proper treatment in the mean time. Between my emergency vet and Dr Hoffman, they gave my dog excellent care, and my dog is now recovering very nicely. The other reviewers are complaining about the price, but since my dog had essentially the same ailment twice in a row, I can safely say that the cost of treatment from start to end are roughly the same, even though I have more meds the second time around. Cost per visit is a little more here than my regular vet, but for the equipment, the expertise, and the excellent service, it's absolutely worth it. On a side note, I really want to commend all vets in general. Think it's hard enough to be a human doctor? Veterinarians have to learn how the body functions for all different species, learn which drugs are safe for some species and poisonous for others, and bear with uncooperative patients that bite and scratch. And yet, people expect to pay considerably less for all this than a human doctor. I know I couldn't do it, so I really appreciate the wonderfully patient and professional staff at Eye Care for Pets. If you want to check my credibility as a reviewer, you can look for my review on Yelp too.

First i called and got a quote of 3-4k so I took my dog there b/c i suspected a cataract in his eye and sure enough after a 10 second visit with the head doctor she confirmed my suspicion. Then they proceeded to give some useless tests which had nothing to do with cataracts. My other dog came along for the trip so she said i can take a look at him as well and I'm thinking sure she just looked into his eye i kid you not, no more than 5 seconds with a magnifier and said he is ok. I go out and get a bill for almost 500 for that visit and my second dog that didn't have any test and the quick look in his eye was a $200 charge. Then the assistant comes out with an estimate which is about $5400 for just one eye. I almost lost it but looked over the estimate closely and noticed there is a 10% increase from the low to high estimate for things that are totally irrelevant of the surgery such as pre surgery procedures and things such as a the Dog collar after the surgery. When i asked the assistant why there are two quotes she explained "b/c during surgery they may need more of the medication and so on" So when i asked her what does the pre surgery procedure and dog collar has to do with the length of the surgery she was clueless. Then i asked her how many times have you done this surgery and to this point you still don't know how long it takes. I mean if they are professionals they should give you one price and not deviate over a $1000 between estimates. After it is all said and done I have an appointment to make my dog to another Eye care specialist which quoted me just around $3000 for one eye and the doctor there is also board certified. After doing some research i discovered this doctor in Pasadena just recently moved into their office so they are basically over charging everything to cover their costs. I can say this ill never take my dog there again and she just lost my business. 11-26-11 Update a year later after going to Animal Eye Clinic is Camarillo where the friendly Board certified Doctors care not only about the dog but you as a human and is not out there to bankrupt you with ridiculous fees. The dog is going great and both eyes are perfect without any problems. Could not be happier. Stay away from these scumbags in Pasadena and go to a caring eye vet like Animal Eye Clinic.

$255 for a one hour initial visit (actual talk time/exam with doctor is 10 minutes, wait time in lobby 45 minutes, 5 minutes in accounting). Suspected my dog has cataract and the story is pretty much the same as the other post. They wanted $9000 for both eyes!! Do they really need that much and take advantage of worry sick owners? Let’s do some math, the surgery take about 2 hour, if that. Plus 4 follow up visits of 1 hour each. For a total of no more than 6 hours (including your sitting and wait time) of the doctor’s time; medication to be no more than $1000 total, so that’s $8000 for no more than 6 hours of the doctor’s time. Wow!! $1333+ per hour ??!! There were many worry sick owners so I think their business is good because they even offer payment plan if you can’t pay for it. So if they do just one cataract surgery a day, they are getting almost $300,000 per month. Keep in mind they have like 6 stores!! $300K X6=$1.8 million per month and over 18 million dollars per year!! Human cataract surgery is $3,000, why so expensive for animal? If they just have some passion about animals they will not take advantage of others like this. I hope when the hospital owner in his mansion with his Bentley and Ferrari can see the faces on those pet lovers worry sick about their family pet. How can they live with themselves? I can not afford the costs so I would have to live with seeing my dog gradually going blind for the rest of her life. This place should face judgment day.

On her first visit to Dr, Combs, my Yorkie was given antibiotics and Optimmune for a painful eye. After 3 days, my Yorkie still had great discomfort. Dr. Combs said give Optimmune twice a day. That did not work so I called for a next day appointment. Dr. Combs said unless the eye was completely closed, they would not see her. "Go somewhere else," is what they said. We did and now my Yorkie is much better.
