I love it here. Except for the prices, but a pet owner accepts that responsibility. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I took a stray kitten here that I wanted to keep as my own, but VCA scanned for a chip and we were able to return her to her owner! I eventually came back a few months later with my two newly adopted kittens and they took great care of them, and were very honest with what I needed to do, and what I could skip or delay.
MY PUPPY, BEAR, DIED AFTER BEING TREATED HERE!!!!. I brought my puppy, Bear, here. Veterinarian Carolyn Remsberg had prescribed and administered, and caused to be administered, 23mg of Cerenia to Bear in one day. He died some 2 hours later. When I called to get her license number, or a way to find her license number, she was "unreachable." I used the information I had about her to find out why searching for "Remsberg" in the State vet database came up with a nursing license that expired in the 90's. Her license number DOES NOT come up under "Remsburg" in the Delaware State veterinarian database. It does come up searching "Gurnee-Remsburg" or "Gurnee." I also found Pfizer's application for FDA approval of Cerenia: "The Freedom of Information Summary Original New Animal Drug Application NADA 141-263 “Cerenia” (Maropitant Citrate) Injectable Solution," which had some interesting information regarding the administration of Cerenia in dogs. Study #1460N-60-01-585 by Dr. Michael C. Savides concluded that Cerenia in dogs under 16 weeks causes bone marrow hypoplasia. The result of the study does not support the safe use of Cerenia in puppies 8 to 11 weeks of age. Other side effects of Cerenia overdose include diarrhea, seizure, shock, coma, and death. Imagine your "Bear" dying after being administered their "23mg!" Now imagine going to your doctor and being refused their license number! Other than the fact that the VCA is expensive, they employ incompetent veterinarians. I'd like to think that Remsburg would not have given such a high dosage, nor prescribed the drug in the first place, to my 10 week old puppy had she read the drug label and listened to the manufacturer. My Bear was a part of the family. He was a member of the family. I know a lot of you feel the same way about your "Bear(s)." You wouldn't want any human member of your family seen by a doctor that does not read or know about the drugs they prescribe! Why would you do it with the animal members?
My old girl was brought in as an emergency for what was a diabetic seizure.. they threw everything at me at a time when I was especially emotional. The doctor who I later re-named as "Dr. Jukenstein" basically told me if I didn't consent to about 4k worth of treatment I "might as well euthanize her," and basically I sucked as a dog-Mom. Thank God I had my sister on the line and my bff's by my side to help me make a good decision. My bff and sister are nurses and what she basically needed an IV of glucose but they wanted to give her all sorts of invasive procedures.. I"m still paying that bill off... they suck, but especially Dr. Jukenstein, who wouldn't even look me in the eye when he spoke. Cleo lived over a year after that initial visit. I wouldn't take my goldfish there. It would probably cost about 3k anyway. The Emergency vets on Airport Road.. stellar, kind, realistic.
I am not sure what has happened in a matter of 3 months but, I took my very very sick puppy there in the middle of the night and they did wonders for her. I truly thought she was going to die and was sick over it. The doctor told me he would do what ever he could to save her and that it would cost $1,500.00. I really didn't have that money to spend on the puppy but there was no way I was going to let here die. With in 24 hours my puppy was as good as new. Everyone in the hospital was very kind and took very good care of my baby. They may be a bit expensive but I love the service and the way they treat my Taza. I will continue to have her treated there.
We brought our kitty in due to constipation. While the staff was very friendly and took their time to explain their diagnosis, there were several things we were disappointed in. We had asked that they remove a piece of matted fur from under her chin, which they did not do. Also, although she was constipated, her rear end was covered in feces when we took her, and her carrier smelled. We were told they would clean her, however she had two "balls" of feces hanging from her tail when we returned home. They also did not check the blanket in the carrier, which turned out to be soiled and should have been removed before putting our kitty back in. Still, we would not hesitate to take her there again, but would make extra sure to ask them, before leaving, if everything was done.
