Took a rescue that I had had less than 24 hours for acute respiratory distress after major surgery and massive systemic insult due to adverse environmental exposure before his rescue. As a human medical ER nurse I'm familiar with most of the treatments for this type of problem but not a tiny little 5 lb 14 year old dog. So happy with intake, treatment, follow-up, updates, discharge instructions, and just "we"re invested in the health of your dog" that I felt completely comfortable having to leave the baby up there for nearly 24 hours. Yep, it will cost. The highest level of emergency intervention does. In the world of human medicine over the years I've found that money can't fix everything like it can in the retail world. So when they give me my estimate along with the effort they will be putting forth in my pet's care I will move Heaven and Earth to pay it, cross my fingers and just HOPE. Thank God for an ER for animals after hours in a small town like ours' here in the Panhandle. Thank God for the receptionist who brings her own dog to work because he's a puppy at 6 months and can't go 8-12 hours without a potty break. Thank god for the vet tech who buys 20 lbs of dog food for the homeless man on the side of the road who can't feed his dogs and then when she delivers the food ends up taking the smallest of his dogs because he tells her, sobbing, he can't keep her warm enough, (she was a Chinese Crested hairless). Thank God for a vet who's been at this for ages but still has the heart to thank you for adopting and caring for the train wreck you have entrusted to their care. I am grateful and when I write the check I am thankful.
Like others before me have written, don't take your pet here. I took my cat with a UTI there; it cost $800 for one day. All they did was anesthesia, catheter, saline bags, and oral medicine for bacterial infection, blood work and monitoring. They didn’t tell me how bad it was either. I moved mountains to find the money to pay them, picked up my cat early on Monday to take to my regular vet only to find out that he could die and that they did give him pain meds or anything to relax his urethra to help him pee. He died that Monday night at my vets’ office. This emergency Vet clinic is mainly after your money, no compassion, no communication; bottom line is the money. FIND SOMEPLACE ELSE!
This place is the worst. The reception staff is unbelievably rude and uncompassionate. Phil Blumer, the vet that I dealt with, is a complete lowlife. I took my dog Manny in on a Saturday with an injured leg. Blumer diagnosed him with a pulled muscle and prescribed Deramaxx. Unfortunately, this incompetent fool failed to do bloodwork to ensure that this medication wouldn t cause my dog s liver and kidneys to shut down; therefore, my beloved friend and companion of ten years dropped dead in front of me four days later. When I confronted this blundering nitwit about his mistake, he made the outrageous claim that he was not responsible for the drugs he prescribes, but rather the drug manufacturer bears the responsibility. Evidently he has been practicing for a long time, but he has clearly lost his passion for animal care. If my dog had never seen Blumer he would still be alive. Be sure your doctor is smart enough to do bloodwork before prescribing NSAIDs, and avoid this idiot at all costs. (Obviously, if it were possible to give this imbecile zero stars, I would.) A search of Okaloosa County Circuit Court's website shows that Phil Blumer had a DUI in 2001. This guy is completely irresponsible in ever way.
I originally went to the Southside Animal Hospital in Crestview, but regretably it was almost closing time to they referred me to this so called emergency clinic. It did not take long for me to realize that all they wanted was to empty my bank account rather than help my basset hound. Their trick is to tell you that your pet needs a specific test to determine what he has. They will come back and tell you the test did not reveal anything and off you go to another test. The issue is that you have agree to pay before each one. This continued for over an hour until they had me up to $2200. I was very upset that in the end he wanted to do exploratory surgery with an overnight stay in their hospital. BTW my basset died that night. Afterwards I came across an article in the newspaper written by a veterinarian that described the very thing he had. But it was too late. My recommendation is for folks who love their pets to stay clear of these people.
Unless it is an absolute life or death emergency, I would strongly advise against taking your pet to this clinic. I took my 9-year-old Yorkie in for a severely impacted, infected anal gland because Banfield had no available appointments for a couple of days. Upon exam, my Yorkie had no fever and completely normal vitals. The veterinarian suggested surgery that would require sedation to place a drain. They suggested a blood panel in addition to the surgery with follow-up medications. The cost estimate given was $650-$850. Aside from my Yorkie's extreme discomfort, there was no real risk to her health. I told them thanks but no thanks. The exam itself still costed me $85. I was finally able to get an appointment with Banfield the following day; the veterinarian suggested antibiotics and steroids to reduce the swelling, and we will return in 10 days to have the anal gland expressed. When my wife told her what the other clinic wanted to do, she seemed shocked. The entire visit with Banfield, medications and all was only $50. Again, if your pet is not having a dire emergency, avoid this clinic like the plague.
