The ladies at the front desk are always friendly and polite. However..... the vet tech and vet there always make me feel like my dog (who is a 6 month old lab mix puppy) is some kind of monster. They always tell me that I should touch his feet more or clean out his ears with THEIR special solution or he is too much of a hassle so I need a couple of other people in the room to restrain your dog. Honestly, he is a puppy and doesn't seem to trust them very much because at home, he lets anyone touch his feet, play with him in most any way and hold him down. Other than making me feel like I have the worst dog in existence, the vet and her tech up sell me on everything. The tell me that I NEED to buy vitamins, skin and coat vitamins, growth vitamins, special solution for his ears, the tooth brush and toothpaste, I need to have them do all of these extra tests and administer shots he doesn't need. Its ridiculous how much I actually spent at my last visit. 240 dollars on vitamins that he honestly doesn't even need. He is a very healthy boy and for someone who cant really afford a 300 dollar visit every time I take my dog into the vets office, its a little outrageous. All in all, the vet is a bitch if she doesn't think your dog has a perfect temperament. plus they upsell you on just about anything. Technically my dog still goes there but I am in the middle of looking for a new vet right now. So anyone looking for a good vet who actually cares about your dog and you don't go here. Keep looking.
New to the area, we had just used Tyndall AFB's Vet Clinic for a routine checkup, but two weeks later had to find emergency care for our very active German Shorthaired Pointer when she opened a gash while playing with other dogs that needed stitches. We chose Callaway based on the recommendation of someone we met in the waiting room at Tyndall (there's no emergency service there). I thought the service was a bit slow (by my yankee standards), but I appreciated the quality of care. Plan a little extra time. Dr. Korda and all the staff were excellent and took great care of our furkid. It's not the cheapest clinic we've ever been to (not by half), but isn't expensive for the local market, either. I did not feel pressured to elect extra services, but was informed and offered options to choose the level of care we could afford and were comfortable with. I valued Dr. Korda's 30+ years of experience and easy manner when explaining the treatment required and other concerns. She truly has our dog's long-term health in mind. The staff was thorough, catching the fact that she was overdue for a Bordatella vaccination when I thought it'd been done two weeks earlier at Tyndall. I wasn't sure why they gave the shot AND the nasal mist, so I asked Dr. Korda about it: The nasal mist is effective within hours, but the annual antigen injection takes weeks to take effect; not ideal when there are sick dogs around. Regarding the negative comment about them recommended extra-frequent tests - the local area is ripe with diseases and parasites that northern winters kill off half the year - which requires extra prevention here.
This place is a rip off. I used to work in a vet clinic and the things they charge you for are insane. Two Bordetella shots? WHY? Just because it is given in different ways doesn't mean you need it both ways, the same day! That doesn't seem healthy, now does it? Just like the Flu shot...I'm not going to go get the shot in my arm and intranasal at the same time!! Overkill...just a way to make some extra money AND SCAM the people who know no better. Fecals every 6 months? Everywhere else it is a year!! We definitely didn't do this when I worked at a vet clinic in VA, so I called around thinking it may be different here in FL...NO, just this rip off place! My dogs smelled horrible after I picked them up for the weekend. They also charged me for an exam, which ok, that fine, at least tell me how it went!! I will definitely be taking my dogs elsewhere and telling everyone else to do the same!
We called quite a few vets in the Panama City area (we live on the Fountain/Marianna line), we decided to trust Callaway Animal Hospital with Peanut Butter's care, and here's why: From the initial phone call, to the special arrangements for his entry into the Callaway Animal Hospital (in a large kennel) and to his two treatments (one the afternoon we brought him in and the other the next morning)--it was all "First Class." The place was immaculate, and EVERYONE there had a smile and knowledgeable and encouraging words. We had an unfortunate occurrence happen to our beloved Peanut Butter. To us, he is not a dog--but a member of our family. After trying to heal him at home for two weeks--Peanut Butter had a setback from playing and was in serious pain--which is what led us to our vet search. The Doctor: Doctor Korda systematically worked her way from his head to his tail and found the problem in less than five minutes. She confirmed her diagnosis with x-rays the next morning. It would be next to impossible to find a better vet anywhere.
I have been going to Callaway Animal Hospital for many years now and I am very happy with the service my pets and I receive. The vets there have been practicing for a long time and they are very good at what they do. The office has to be the cleanest and most neutral smelling out of any of the other vets I have been to in the past which is a plus. The prices are fair and I know my pets are in good hands.
