It was a Friday night and my dog, Jasper, was uncharacteristically still and whimpered when he tried to stretch. St Francis is one of the few places that was open so we took him there. There weren't very many other patients, so we didn't have to wait long. The vet examined him and took a couple x-rays. He said that it appeared my dog had been eating mulch and he fed him canned yams and gave him an enema to try to unblock his colon. We left him overnight to see if the problem resolved itself with time and additional yams The vet warned me that Jasper might need surgery, but we lucked out. Everything was moving again by noon the next day. I cost about $300 which I thought sounded fair given that it was an emergency visit on the weekend.
The worse experience of my life! Please dont go to this people the treatment towards the owner that just lost a pet is beyond horrible. I took my dog there because i am catholic and since saint Francis is the guardian of pets i believe that would be a great place specially when i was facing the possibility of having to let my baby go. The doctor was very blunt but polite, the nurse helping him was very nice and help a lot with my dogs passing. The problem came when i had to pay, unfortunately my card was declined i offered to pay with a check and they refused to take a check. At that point i was told i couldn't leave the office without making payment or they will call the cops. I explained i had no other form of payment and even applied for a credit service which i was denied. The person who i assume is the manager even went as far as telling me "well your dog is dead so nothing grantee you will pay" and also "well i don't know you so i don't know if you will pay". At this point i left the check on the counter and walked out and the called the cops and actually requested i be arrested because i stole from them by not paying. A dear friend did the favor of paying the bill as a loan.... but the point is i have never seen people treat a person wight after the loss of someone important in their life this way. I was already devastated by the death on my pup... there was no need for this treatment.
I took my(Jack Russell Terrier) one night in March of 2012. Have in mind he was 14 years old at the time (b. 1998). It seemed that he had bad indigestion because he had problems defecating. Also I was concern because he was breathing very heavy. So as any worried pet owner I went ahead and took him to St. Francis where me, my dog, and my dad sat and waited 2 hours to be attended. Finally a nurses weighed him and gave him X-Rays. As I was waiting another 30 minutes for a vets response I stepped out of the hospital with him where he was started to regain his strength and was able to defecate. I went back into the room where he was assigned and the vet looked at him and said there was nothing wrong with him from the X-Rays and the regular procedural check up however he suggested I allow him to do blood work. I told him "he's regained his energy and stop breathing heavy, I want take him now and let him sleep, if I feel he's not doing well I'll come back tomorrow morning." The moment I said that, he tells me "sir your dog is very sick" firmly. I responded "I'll take your concern in consideration but I would like to take him home." He later responds "its your dog but I'm not going to write down that we competed the checkup" as if he was trying to express to me that he's expunging himself from liability. Without concern I was fine with that statement. Then he tells will you like copies of his X-rays for his primary vet. Little did I realize from after I paid a ($247 bill) he sold me an unnecessary service in giving me those X-rays copies on CD. The following day my dog was running around and eating well like normal. So much for being "very sick" as this vet claimed. My Jack Russell is now 16 years old and living well and as a lesson learned I promised myself is to keep listening to my instincts before going into any medical realm of uncertainty, human or animal. I find St. Francis a financial burden and a place for opportunist in the veterinary field. If your reading this and its late at night and you love your "family member" as well as your money because these are tough times stay away from this place by all means necessary.
