I have been seeing Dr's Bill and Gary since they opened the clinic. I have greyhounds which apparently react differently than most other dogs to procedures as well as their bloodwork is different. These doctors have always treated me and my pets with care and dignity. I have watched their staff grow and some folks are better than others - but that is true in any clinic. My daughter is interested in veterinary medicine and the docs allowed her to watch and discussed some of the simple procedures they did in the office. I could not imagine taking my pets to any other clinic in the Wichita area.
A friend recommended a different animal hospital for my dogs because this one was generally more expensive than others in the area, but I wanted to try it because of the attached play and stay. Initially, the staff was friendly and quick to schedule appointments. However, what changed my opinion is that I was recommended a procedure for my dog that he didn't need. I have been to several different vets in other areas I have lived, and this is a red flag for me. I want to always do what's best for my pets, but I also don't have an endless budget for tests/exams/etc and need a vet who can help me make the best decisions with that in mind. When I found out that my pet didn't really need the recommended procedure, the vet made me feel as if I didn't want what was best for my pet. I have had some really great vets in the past, but I feel as if this animal hospital is focused too much on the bottom line rather than solid, appropriate care for animals. If you need to balance pet care with your budget, I think there are better options in the area.
So far we have had good results at Heartland. Dr. Gary is very nice and seems caring. We have had two UTIs with our little bulldog and that is worrisome.
We took our new pug puppy to Heartland because a fellow pug owner highly recommended the clinic. Unfortunately, we had to make a difficult decision right away when our dog developed a corneal ulcer that ruptured: either elect to take her out of town to a specialist for an expensive surgery, or wait and see what happened (and put her at risk of losing her eye). We decided to go with the surgery, which would have been an easy decision had we not been in a really difficult financial place. A week after our dog's surgery at K-State Veterinary Medical Center (which rocks, by the way), I took her back to Heartland because I was worried that there was something wrong with the graft. Dr. Rypma saw her and said that there was some cause for concern, and she would consult with our dog's opthamologist at K-State and call us if we needed to go back to Manhattan for immediate follow-up. So imagine my irritation when, at our next follow-up visit at K-State, we found out the call had never been made (and, in fact, the graft had slipped and we were tremendously lucky that she didn't have to have another surgery ... because we couldn't have afforded to spend another $1500 plus meds, plus more travel costs, etc.). Even worse, when I called Heartland to make them aware of what had happened, I received an indifferent non-apology. Needless to say, we haven't been back.
I used to go here when I lived in Wichita, unfortunately we have moved but I haven't been able to find a place as great. I love the little license card they gave us for our dog's vaccines, I just hand that to however needs it and I don't have to carry around his papers.
