I wish that they had more volunteers to help walk these dogs. They are so excited to get on a lease and do their business outside. I have done this but due to a bad back I cant do it now. I think that it would be nice if they did post adoptable animals and not euthanize so many animals but if they arent adopted a reputable rescue would be a good solution. I think this facility is depressing and outdated and would not be a desirable place to work. The people I have encountered there have been very nice but they have to follow rules given to them. I wish that there were only rescue placing animals but there are not enough homes to do this so we have to have humane society. Too many irresponsible pet owners out there . Too many puppy mills, too bad this our reality.
Went here to purchase a kitten for my daughter. They don't even let you visit with the pets until you complete the paperwork. They treat you like a criminal. Example: Question: Do you rent or own your home? Answer: Own. Is it a home or a condo. Answer: Home. Question: So you don't live in a condo? Answer: No. Why do you treat people who are trying to rescue an animal as if they are liars? Then you get answers about our deceased animals??!!!! Geez, have a little compassion for people who lost treasured members of their families!! After waiting twenty minutes while they called our vet to verify our information, we were told that we could not even visit with a cat until my dog was up to date on his shots. He's five years old and was two months behind on one shot! Absolutely ridiculous!! The animal control in Macomb was way easier to deal with and nice. I will never stop in here again. Please revisit your policies and retrain your staff so more animals can be placed into loving homes since that is what you exist for.
If you are overwhelmed then why wouldn't you be open to rescue to rescue transfers of animals? Why aren't you rescue friendly? I know many reputable rescues, including the one I run, that would help by pulling animals from you and finding them wonderful homes. If you are overwhelmed then why not ask for help?! Also, why not let people take pictures and crosspost your animals on social media? This would grately increase the liklihood of them finding homes and would reduce or eliminate the killing of adoptable animals. Start a facebook page, use petfinder and adoptapet. Post your animals. Finally, why do you feel only people who have a fenced yard are responsible pet owners? Many people who live in apartments are wonderful pet owners. There are many fantastic people and adopters that walk their dogs daily, run with their dogs, and take their dogs to daycare to socialize. Not having a fenced in yard should not deter you from adopting out an animal. Screen properly but do not play god and act like only those with a fence are acceptable adopters. It simply isn't true. My rescue has done many many perfectly wonderful placements with people that do not have fenced yards. Until you are doing everything in your power, including all of the above, to rehome animals, then you are failing as a rescue facility. These are simple things you can do to reduce kill rates, they have proven effective for many other shelters. I (and many others including reputable rescues) really hope you change your ways and stand by to assist with helping to network your animals for you as well as assiting in pulling and rehoming via reputable rescue.
All you people complaining about "policies" have no idea what goes into running a rescue. Don't like euthanasia? Do your part in educating people about spaying and neutering their animals. It's not the shelter's fault that they are OVERWHELMED with the amount of puppies and kittens that are brought in due to irresponsible ownership and breeding. The shelter can't just make new kennels appear out of thin air. If you find an abandoned animal, try taking it to a rescue organization with foster care. A little google search does wonders, people. And I understand that the adoption process might be lengthy, but it's only to ensure that each and every animal goes to a SAFE home. If you truly are willing to open your home and heart to a shelter pet, then the inconvenience of the paperwork shouldn't even be an issue for you. You do realize that some people go to shelters and adopt kittens to be used as bait in dog fighting rings, right? The staff of Humane Societies everywhere have to deal with people constantly adopting animals as if they're toys or merchandise so if you don't like the process, do your part to help restore their faith in the general public and stop acting like entitled brats.
I have taken my dog to the humane society clinic a total of four times. I appreciate how inexpensive it is take her to the humane society, and how they are always willing to work with you when you have a restricted budget as far as coming up with alternative medicines and etc. I found them quick and very professional each time I went, so I am not sure what people on this sight are talking about but I was not trying to adopt. I was one of those people who did not realize how much went into taking care of a dog, and jumped before I leaped because my daughter desperately wanted a dog almost four years ago so we adopted Bella randomly on a trip to WalMart. I recently had to take my dog in because she became very sick, and I found Dr. Collins amazing, caring, and just someone who you can appreciate. She took the time to explain everything to me regarding my dog, and she went over in detail all my options regarding my dog. She was very honest and I appreciate that. She made a very difficult decision just a little more bearable. Although I had to make a heart wrenching decision to put her down, and don't see myself ever getting another animal. I would easily recommend the humane society to anyone who needed care for their animal.
