Don't go here for rats! Dr. Janke seems nice and competent for "normal" pets, but he was not great with my rats or roommate's rats. I have 3 little girl rats, who all had a respiratory infection when I bought them. I took them to Dr. Janke less than a week after getting them because of the wheezing noises they were making. As a first-time rat owner, I had to look up a lot of info online to figure out what might be wrong with my rats. When I went to Rolla Animal Hospital, I was hoping the vet could give me some good info and advice for what was wrong with my rats and how to best care for them. I ended up doing most of the talking, and then Dr. Janke looked up a common rat antibiotic to give me and sent me on my way. My rats quickly recovered, so I was happy with the experience. However, a couple months later my roommate decided to adopt some rats of her own since she loved my rats so much. She adopted 4 boy rats from a local pet store. From our experience with my rats' respiratory infection, we noticed right away that the rats were sick when she adopted them. She took them to the vet the day after she adopted them to get them on antibiotics right away. Dr. Janke did not take her concerns seriously, telling her the respiratory irritation was likely caused by irritation from an unclean cage at the pet store. She had to convince him that she was willing to pay the extra money for the antibiotic to be sure her new pets got better as soon as possible. She got the antibiotics and asked if there was anything else that she could possibly do to ensure she got her rats healthy ASAP. He did not offer any advice, and told her to make another appointment if they did not get better. The rats did not respond to the antibiotic, and their poop started to have yellowish worm-looking things in it. The three biggest rats seemed to get a little better, but the smallest rat got sicker and sicker, with more and more of his poop getting full of the stringy yellow things. Concerned about parasites and the worsening respiratory infection, we took her rats back to Rolla Animal Hospital. Dr. Janke finally seemed to take the sickness more seriously. He ran a test for parasites and to our relief determined that the substance in the poop was actually mucus. However, we were still very concerned about the smallest rat. He gave us a different antibiotic just for the small one and said he should be better in a few days. The next day, the poor rat died. He was so small and fragile we thought he might, but were renewed by the hope that Dr. Janke gave us. He did not seem to realize the severity of the respiratory infection, and I can't help but think we could have saved the rat if he had taken us more seriously from the beginning. The rat was probably too sick to help from the get go, especially since he was so small, but even if he was beyond help, Dr. Janke could have done a much better job of giving us treatment options and care advice or at least more realistic expectations. The three bigger rats are still wheezing and sneezing some, and I hope that they get better soon.

I have had two cats declawed at Rolla Animal Hospital, and they have done a great job on both of them. The animals recovered quickly and seemed to be in minimal distress after the operation. In addition, the staff has generally been very friendly and easy to work with.
