When I first moved to the area, I tried Dr. Grier with my pets (cats), normally continuing to see my former vet in Wilton, NH (3/4 hour away). He misdiagnosed them and after a while I wouldn’t even buy a bag of dog food from him! Case #1 I took a cat to him because someone had scratched her eye. He proceeded to give her a Rabies vaccination without my consent because she was a month out of date. You should never give a Rabies shot when an animal is ill. Further, you can do a rabies titer if in doubt. Research has found that vaccine immunity may last up to 10 or 15 years. He then prescribed an eye ointment with steroids in it. When she was no better a week later, I took her back to him. He checked her again, then sent me on our way telling me to continue the treatment. I then took her to my “former” vet who found she had a scratch on her cornea and you NEVER use steroids in that case. On a new medication she improved almost immediately. Case #2. Tiny newborn Ragdoll kitten with diarrhea. It was a bitter cold day in March and I preferred NOT to take her out. They said to bring in a stool sample. Able only obtain was miniscule due to the diarrhea and size of the kitten (just a 2 or 3 ounces). They determined that wasn’t sufficient, so I scheduled an appointment to bring her in. They were not able to get a stool sample either. His reaction was to shrug his shoulders and say “fading kitten”. Once again, I called my former vet. Over the phone she told me to put the kitten on Pedialite, then called me back a few days later to see how the kitten was doing. I told her the kitten acted like it was absolutely starving looking for that Pedialite. At that point she had me feed the kitten baby meat. The diarrhea immediately ceased and the kitten began to gain weight. She thrived and ended up being one of my largest cats. My guess is that she had lactose intolerance. Case #3. On another occasion began with my very first Ragdoll litter Holly gave birth to one kitten that was stillborn (I later learned).Ultimately it was 17 hours before the next 4 arrived, thriving and healthy. But in the meantime I was frantic. I ended up taking the mom to Dr. Grier who took an xray. While he was showing me the kittens inside the mom, a young child came running in the room while I was trying to see what was happening. That was JUST FINE with him. I too am curious, have children and love to share information, but I was a very stressed, paying client and that child had NO business blocking the xray I paid for. . (By the way, Dr. Grier prefers backyard breeders!! Duh! And doesn’t recommend early spay/neuter [see the Winn Feline Foundation on their recommendations. Dr. Grier talked about ferrets [hello?]) One final incident left me totally devastated. I had an elderly cat in chronic renal failure. It is terminal. Followed closely to my “former” vet, and based on blood tests we gave him they were given sub Q fluids and specially compounded medicines at home traveling to Bedford, NH to get them. There finally came that time we had to make the dreaded decision to put him down. He was unsteady, appeared to be going blind and I was afraid he would fall off the bed where he slept while we were at work. I put him on a pillow and took him to Dr. Grier to put him to sleep. They were very kind about it, but after the cat was DEAD, he told me that maybe the cat only had low blood sugar. Great timing Dr. Grier! Very comforting!! Because of my stated experiences, in my opinion Dr. Grier is completely incompetent. I do NOT recommend him.
We have seen Dr. Grier since 2001 and I have complete faith in him. He has cared for our animals with compassion and kindness and has helped our family through the most difficult times. Dr. Grier has repeatedly and successfully recommended the least invasive treatments for our pets and I would recommend him whole heartedly to anyone.
Everytime I have gone to this vet I get a creepy feeling, My dog doesn't like the vet & when my dog is stressed well that's makes me stressed I am switching vets & was told by his office that he will not release my pets medical records That is in violation with the code of ethics I have put a call into the state regarding this matter!
I drove all the way from Billerica, Mass, to bring my critters to Dr. Grier. He is one of the most knowledgeable vets I know! He has treated everything from an eye cap on a Chinese Water Dragon, a bacterial infection on our python, a hair wrapped around the paw of our hedge hog, neutering our goat, checking our chicken, and also tending to our dogs and cats! I would recommend him in a heart beat!
