Love, love, LOVE my experience here- far superior to the other ER which we had frequented before we found Port City (I have a mischievous lab!)- Dr. Hillman is amazing and truthfully, everyone there has been amazing. I wish they could be our family vet- but alas, they cannot. And as for the reviewers speaking of money... I actually think that they are NOT all about the money- they've done their best to try to work with me, despite their extreme limitations. They're highly trained & specialized care-givers, and that does cost money, but they do have big hearts. I HIGHLY recommend them...

We were traveling to Maine with our elderly, extra large dog over Labor Day weekend when he began to have trouble getting into our vehicle. He has had difficulty with his right hip before, but it seemed like it was under control until this incident. Fortunately, Port City was right along rt. 95, and we called ahead to make sure they could see us. We received excellent care immediately upon our arrival. Amy, the receptionist, was so kind to our dog, affectionately calling him "Charlie Bear," the Bear part because of his size. Samantha, the technician, made friends with him immediately while taking his history. He was seen by Dr. Ginger Berger. Often he is very shy, hiding behind his dog-dad or dog-mom, but he was willing to go off with Dr. Berger for a detailed exam. She ended up prescribing Rimadyl and a pain med med and gave us a sufficient supply to cover our entire vacation. Charlie was able to walk normally and jump into our car and trailer by the next evening. Just as an aside, this Sunday evening trip to a specialized veterinary clinic cost us much less than a visit to our regular vet practice in suburban Washington DC during normal hours of operation. Even the meds were cheaper! This place is a gem!

My 4 month old Mastiff ate a sock. After speaking with my regular vet Saturday morning, he suggested that if symptoms worsen to call Port City. Symptoms did get worse, and so when I called the lady who answered was very nice and compassionate. Upon arrival the secretary (I forgot his name) came right around and met my puppy and comforted him. Dr. Berger was excellent. She was upfront about the cost of xrays before she did them. When the xray was suggestive of a blockage Dr. Berger went over the options we had and the risks and benefits of each one. She didn't make me feel like I should choose one or the other, she let me decide based on the information she gave me. I am a critical care nurse, so I did have some background knowledge to help me decide, and she was understanding of that also. She went and typed up the three options and how much each one would cost. I ended up choosing to have subcutaneous fluids and bring him home to watch him hoping it would pass. He has passed another sock in the past, and his current symptoms weren't suggestive of a complete blockage. Early in the morning, after a successful passing of the sock, I called back and spoke with Dr. Berger and asked for anything I should do now that he has passed the sock. She was very detailed and helpful. Any kind of emergency visit is going to be expensive, and I don't like reading reviews that complain of the price. Everyone at Port City was very upfront of the cost, even when I first called before even arriving, the lady on the phone told me how much it was going to be just to be seen. It was very clean. There was FREE coffee! (and it was good coffee too). Everyone was so nice. When I was trying to leave and my puppy wouldn't get up off the floor to walk, that awesome secretary came over again and played with my puppy until he was up on his feet and wagging his tail! It was a great experience for such a scary situation!

They're all about the $$$$$ - My dog ate some chocolate and threw all of it up after some peroxide. He is a 110 lbs and was seemed fine after, we called just to get some advice and they would not give any and just said to bring him in. We asked on the cost and they said it would be $85.00 and upon speaking with the Dr. they said around $100.00 because of the fluid injection. They bring him out back and upon leaving the Bill is $295.00 This place is clearly a dishonest business, I will not every return here again. It turned out they gave him 3 injections, $38, $38 and $133 and just walking in the door was $85. When bringing my dog in the back.. We notified them that he can be aggressive towards other dogs and they said ok, when the door re-opened he was pulling the nurse down the hall snapping at another dog. I don't understand at all why they couldn't give the injections in the office with myself..it was a complete lack of thought and could have resulted in further injury on mine or another owners dog.

There is no compassion in this Animal EMER Hospital. My experience was that they rushed into a surgery which was needless and only hurt my pet. Then, there was no one after the surgery who cared enough to help. $6,000 for 2 days! They have offered me $500 because I have complained. It’s all about the $$. Go to Angell in Boston. Best care in the country. 1 star for cleanliness.
