I took my horse in Last Thursday and I can't say enough good things about the hospital and the people working there. Dr. Mike worked on my horse during his lunch hour and at least 3 or 4 of the office staff came out to check on us. While Mike was working with another horse he stopped working on that horse for a few minutes, to get my horses treatments started. Laura is great and is very knowledgeable about horses. I have always had good experiences going to the Shawnee Animal Hospital.
Don't take your pet here if it's an emergency. Yesterday, (3/11/14) I witnessed my boyfriends dog get hit by a car. It was as awful as it sounds. We ran to her and just tried to calm her down and keep her still. My housemate, who also witnessed the accident, came out and said she would call her vet. She called this place, since she already has a history with them, and she was instructed to bring the dog in. We pull up and expecting to be greeted with people eager to help us and help the dog but we get there and the woman behind the desk was very clearly not in any hurry. We put her on the scale to weigh her, gave her all the information about the dog, and she stands up and informs us there's a $200 deposit that needs to be paid before anything can be done with the dog. We assure her it will be paid but that someone needs to come look at this dog that GOT HIT BY A CAR. She wasn't having any of it and just kept repeating "you need money to get stuff done." I find a friend who is willing to help us pay the deposit. Deposit is paid and we're taken to a back room where we get the dog on oxygen. We waited 20 minutes for the vet to get there which, upon his arrival, he, too, was not in a state of emergency. I'm crying over the dog, my boyfriend is still in shock, and my two housemates are there with me and they, too, are clearly distraught over what's happened. He slowly started an IV, didn't say much or give us much information about the dogs overall state of health, and just kept doing things at a slow pace. After a little time with her he told us she had feeling on all 4 legs but that she had some brain damage and possible internal bleeding. Then he put more stuff in her IV bag and walked away. (NOTE: If you're the vet, and have years upon years of experience, why couldn't you look at the dog and determine its quality of life before filling her with all this medicine?) The woman was prepping the surgery room, supposedly, and we were then left with the dog as she just kept taking big breaths and laying still. We each took turns stroking her stomach as one held her head to the oxygen mask. At this time I was holding the mask while my boyfriend was stroking her stomach and she took 3 deep breaths and then she was gone. Upon informing the woman that the dog had stopped breathing she said "oh, okay, uh well let me go get the vet" and WALKED off to go get him. He comes in and starts pumping her chest (CPR) and then pronounces her dead. The vet and the woman walk over to the computer to where they start crunching numbers and she comes to us and says "There's a balance of $64 that needs to be paid now" and one of my housemates snaps up and says "Can we just have 5 minutes alone with the dog.." And she replied "Oh, sure.." She comes back and requests payment again. Upon which she not so politely says "You can save $20 if you take her home and burry her yourself" and I just look at her dumbfounded that she's saying all of this. We paid the balance due and just left. We were not treated with any respect. Our dog was not a priority. There was no state of urgency to try and even save her. We were not given any time with the dog alone to truly grasp what had just happened or to even mourn our loss. Very disgusted with this place and the actions of those who were there at the time. I do believe that we were treated this way because of our ages -- I am 24, my boyfriend is 23, and my two housemates are 22. Three of us were OBU students, and now work full-time jobs and my boyfriend is in school and works full-time as well. Just because we are young does not mean we should be treated any differently than if a family came through with their dog in the same situation. Also, the vet we saw was, I believe, the owner of the clinic itself. He has the most experience (according to the website). Well, I'm happy you have all the experience, sir, I just wish they could have taught you some compassion as well. My advice to whomever is reading this is to take your pet somewhere else.
Shawnee Animal Hospital will not be getting my business after today. I called at about 9:25 a.m. to try to set an appointment for my pets. The girl who answered the phone sounded like she had just woken up. I asked if they treated rats and she said they had treated rats. I asked for clarification about weather there was a vet on staff who specialized in exotics and she said "ummm, no" so then I asked if the vet had much experience with rats and the receptionist said "wellll, he have seen them sooo I guess..." In a really snotty tone, as if I were some idiot just trying to bother her. I would rather drive all the way to OKC where I KNOW there is an experienced exotics vet who will see my rats. I have worked reception in a vet's office and none of the questions I asked were particularly difficult or unusual and there was absolutely no excuse for her lack of professionalism. I just moved and have, in addition to my rats two dogs and a cat that also need to have their first vet visit but we will go elsewhere. I expected a lot more but after seeing their Google reviews it seems like only their own employees have anything nice to say.
My medical background includes several years spent in a level 2 trauma center at a human hospital. As an employee and a client, I am proud of the quality of medicine that our hospital offers and find it consistently in line with the highest standards of medicine, human or animal.
Have taken my animals here for years and would highly recommend. If you want your pets in the best hands then this is your place. Always took the time to make me & my animals there top priority. Thank you!
