I have twice used Pet Emergency Treatment Services, once for a bout of sciatica in a senior Pomeranian about 2 months ago, and today 11/2/14 for euthanasia because my vet's office was "only open until noon on Saturday and booked solid". Dr. Huber and Holly were very kind, compassionate and caring for both my dog and me. They helped make a very difficult decision easier and, most importantly, merciful. I am very grateful to have had very positive experiences and recommend them highly.

I had a similar negative experience as "A Google User" below. While most of the staff were pleasant in my "middle-of-the-night" visit, one male vet/vet tech was particularly negative and accusatory. I brought my diabetic cat in one night because he showed signs of insulin shock. He was not responsive to me; he was not eating; his head was moving in a circular motion; he was disoriented (circling with his body and getting stuck in odd places). All classic signs of insulin shock. The male vet asked if I had given too much insulin or perhaps given twice the amount. I said it was possible that I made an error, but in the last 8 months, I had not done so. My cat's blood glucose was dangerously low: 40! They gave my cat an IV of glucose, but when the vet suggested keeping him overnight and running more tests that would including other tests (even a heart test) and run over $1,000! I had to decline. I cried in the office because the vet basically said if I took my cat home, he could die. He was accusatory in that he blamed me for the low-blood-glucose and then he PERSISTED in telling me I was not making good decisions for my cat. He told me I HAD to MISS work the following day and bring my cat in immediately to my own vet. I was aghast. What right did this vet have to make decisions like this for me? Long story short: MY CAT SURVIVED THE NIGHT! And is still alive today! A diabetic cat who is in remission! Yep. My cat no longer needed insulin. The night he went into shock, he probably had NORMAL blood glucose and when I injected him, his blood sugar dropped. Lantus insulin has such a high rate of remission, but it also has the highest rate of insulin shock, or hypoglycemia. So I had NOT given too large a dose. I was not to blame (except for the fact that I could have been monitoring my cat's glucose at home, but my own vet did not require this). My final conclusion of the experience: You will be helped by this hospital. You will pay. And you may even be cajoled into paying for things that are not necessary. And last, but not least, there is a chance you will be chastised and humiliated by the staff.

Can't say enough good comments about Lancaster P.E.T.S. We've, unfortunately, had several emergencies with our different rescued feral cats, over the years. Every situation was handled excellently. You WILL pay a premium price however, but for your pet to be seen at 3:00AM on a holiday..... worth EVERY penny!!!

I was pleasantly surprised here and had a great experience. Since it was the middle of the night, I didn't know where to go but felt immediate attention was needed with my senior retired greyhound Apollo. The staff was attentive, caring, professional and detailed - vet tech Dustin & Dr. Mark Huber were caring. I'll spare my dog's health issues since there's many, but after initially assessing and examining him, they calmed my nerves, clearly explaining my options and course of treatment. I chose to take him home with me, rather than incurring an overnight hospitalization (and save the expense), and the next day they called to follow-up. I spoke with the receptionist first, then Dr. Huber again. He was professional, polite and again answered all questions. For a middle of the night emergency, it was around $600 (not bad!) with a walk in/vet charge of around $80 (decent!). Thankfully, nothing was incredibly serious but now I know a place open holidays/weekends/evenings JUST IN CASE! I hope to not ever need them again, but now I know. Overall, pretty impressed with them from A-Z!

I would not recommend taking your animal to P.E.T.S. unless it is your only option and your animal needs to be stabilized immediately. I took my dog there after she suffered a minor injury to her leg as I wanted to make sure she wasn't in constant pain until my vet opened the following day. I waited for over 3 hours. When I finally got 5 minutes with the vet, I clearly explained what was going on with my dog and what I wanted - to manage her pain until I could call my vet. I was then given a $700 estimate to include bloodwork and Lyme Disease testing. I asked the vet if there would be a problem waiting until the following morning to call my vet (whom I trust very much) to talk about my options past pain management and she made it sound as if I would be doing something to hurt my dog to wait. I asked if we could possibly start with X-rays in order to see if there was a fracture or tear before going to the several hundred dollar blood testing and I was told that they have to do bloodwork first. I decided against pursuing that course of action and yet still left with a $230 bill for two shots and 6 pain pills and 5 minutes with a vet who did little more than perform a very cursory examination and offer a recommendation for unnecessary and expensive testing. I was also asked to hold the dog during her brief examination and while she received her shots, which was not something I felt comfortable with. When I called my vet first thing this morning, I was told that I should just keep an eye on the pup and make sure she takes it easy and there is no reason to bring her in unless she seems to feel worse. I am glad my pal didn't have to spend an entire day and evening in pain, but I was very disappointed in the care and treatment she received at P. E. T. S. There were several other animals and owners waiting as well and for the 3+ hours that I was waiting to go in, not one staff person came to check in on my dog or any other animals, to the point where two owners ended up getting up and leaving with their pets before even seeing the vet.
