I got my two kitties from them, and they are brothers. No complaints there. My complaints actually exist within the volunteer portion. I've been trying to volunteer with them for months. However, my work schedule doesn't allow me to get off for any of the training days the occur every Thursday and Saturday. I would literally have to take a day of leave just to attend. Instead of working with me, they act like they don't need me as a volunteer, and refuse to send me a message either saying "sure we'll work with you" or "sorry, we refuse to make an exception and change a training date for those who can't make it, volunteer elsewhere".
We are a wiener dog rescue, Dachshund Rescue NW. We work almost weekly for years now with the folks at the clinic, attend their events with dogs from our rescue or ones that we donate to the shelter when we are not able to place them here which they always find homes in less than a week, foster their dogs and do what we can to be a good partner for the folks at this shelter. I would have to check but they have probably fixed over 300 of our homeless wieners now at their clinic. In my years of working with Spokanimal staff and volunteers they have been nothing but kind, funny, professional and courteous with a lot of communication back and forth which we do not get from other animals shelters in this town, Spokane. Plus this is the ONLY shelter managers that have actually come out to the farm to inspect us so that we could be one of their shelter partners. That tells me a lot about all the folks who work and volunteer at Spokanimal. They cared enough to come to the farm here and to see what we do even on a busy weekend when we had a lot of volunteers and when we were adopting one of our dogs. I suggested a weekend so they got a feel for how many folks are involved in our dog rescue. That way they could see some of the folks in action at our dog rescue working to place our homeless wiener dogs. Plus they gave us a "stamp of approval" with our open door policy allowing 3000 visitors a year here so that we show exactly what we do with the rescued dogs as well as our own critters. The other shelter's manager in Spokane county have never been here even on our non-busy days when we place over 120 homeless dogs each year and have now placed over 1100 since 1991. We are a licensed dog rescue with the county so SCRAPS has sent an inspector for our annual license and pay our licensing fee, but NONE of their management knows what we do here or how our rescued dogs are part of the family or to meet some of our foster home folks or other volunteers, etc. I wish the other shelter's managers would see in person some of the rescuers that they work with so they have a better understanding of how they care for their critters BEFORE they partner with those shelters or rescuers. So thanks for allowing our dog rescue to pull the wiener dogs from Spokanimal that you feel you can't place and allowing us to train and socialize them so we can get them rehomed rather than just putting them down. Because of Spokanimal we are able to place a lot more dogs each year and happy to help them with those dogs that just need a bit more training and manners before they are ready for their new lives. Bless you for all you do for the community. Sincerely, Margo Mossburg Director, Dachshund Rescue NW and Dachshund Club of Spokane
I am sorry to see these negative reviews. I adopted a pit bull mix from Spokanimal several years ago and found the people to be extremely helpful and compassionate toward the animals. She took a great deal of time educating me on the issues surrounding owning a pit bull. She also knew the dog that was set on adopting me very well and able to describe personality traits of THAT particular dog and what to expect. Because she took that time to reassure me, I adopted that dog who turned out to be one of the best dogs I have ever had, and at 62 years of age, I've had quite a few. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Spokanimal to anyone and when I am ready for another dog, will return to them first.
I love this place soo much! Probable the best place, the dogs look like they are loved for there.
The shelter was very nice, most of the staff is very friendly and helpful. Today I visited for the first time - after finding someone to fill in at work for me - I met some of the dogs and right on their cages is said to meet and greet before adopting. I asked about bringing in my dog to meet after work - they all encouraged me to do so and I said I would be back when I get off work and drive home and back with my dog (all in all I drove over 50 miles today) But needless to say when I arrived they said all the dogs are gone ( I arrived approx. 4:50pm left work early and drove quickly with my dog). Then they asked if I wanted to be on a wait list - are you kidding me? After getting my hopes up of getting a shelter dog? - Why encourage me to waste all my time, gas etc. . . . . Not sure if I will EVER go back.
