We have been taking our dogs/cats to Deschutes clinic for over 20 years now. Dr Castle is our hero and he is a gem! He's been our one and only vet. We love him. I was especially touched when we had to put our Springier Spaniel down just over 7 years ago. We'd had our "Charlie Girl" for over 15 years from just weeks old. Dr. Castle was her doctor from day one. We waited as long as we could but she, nor I could no longer endure the pain. When it was time, I took Charlie in and Doctor spent a good 30 minutes with us, just petting Charlie and giving her treats the whole time we were talking to her and telling her how much I loved her. Doctor cried with me and was so tender & loving. We had known it was due weeks prior but it didn't make it any easier. I had never had to go through that before and I'm afraid it's coming again soon enough. I only pray that Doctor Castle doesn't retire before I have to go through this again, as I couldn't imagine anyone else beside me and our pet. Our Springier now is "Summer Breeze" and she has health issues at age 12. We have been Blessed having this clinic and Dr. Castle to share our fur family with. Love you guys and all the girls too :) Linda & Gary Fraley
I took both of my Boston Terriers to the Deschutes Veterinary Clinic to get their rabies shots. The clinic however thought that meant to do an exam as well. In which I never asked for in the first place but the clinic never told me of this until it was time to pay the bill. What should of been under $50 dollars turned into $150 with the $49 exam fee for each dog, when I asked why the exam fee the clinic said it was mandatory. I called two other local veterinary clinics each one said that they are not mandatory to have exams with rabies shots. So I called Deschutes Veterinary clinic back to discuss the bill. Needless to say I will never take my dogs back there ever again. This clinics unmoral fees and addition unnecessary treatments just so they can fill there pockets is not the way you do business. I would advise anyone to stay away from this clinic unless you are ok with them trying to nickel and diming you on every visit.
I have never written a negative review before so I obviously feel very strongly about this. I have been a patient at the clinic for well over 18 years - long before it took new ownership. Never have I been treated with such a lack of compasion as I was yesterday. As I told Dr. Balius, you can't just be compassionate most of the time, but not when its not convienent for you. I rushed in to the clinic at 4:30 with a two day old puppy that was cold and barely moving. I aked for thier help. They mentioned they had just recieved the paperwork from the emercency pet center regarding the mothers emergency c-section. They knew who I was before I even told them. After about 5 minutes, I was coldly told by the receptionist that there was 4:30 apt. they tried to reschedule but she must be already on her way....sorry. That was it. They never touched the puppy, never said that would be best handled at the emergency center - nothing. Just left me standing there. Needless to say I rushed of to the emergency center in a desparate effort to save the baby. At 5:15 pm, while my puppy was being treated, I called the clinic to see what happened - why they turned away a critital patient. I was simply told that the receptionist was following the orders of Dr. Balius. When I returned to the clinic today to get copies of all of my pets records - as I will obviously NEVER return there - asked to speak with Dr. Baliff, who gave the "order" to send me away. I asked Dr.Balius what happened - why did they so coldly turn me away? I wanted to give them a chance to expain. I was told that they only had two drs on staff that day and they had a client in and an appointment at 4:30. I asked her why I was treated with no compassion at all? Why did no one at least suggest that with this emergency it would be best to go the emergency clinic and they would call and let them know I was coming? Anything would have been better than what I recieved. It is very clear to me and to non-Deschutes Clinic vets I have talked to that critial patients should always been seen before non-critial patients. We have all experience Dr appointments in the human arena where a critical patient comes into the pediatrics office or the orthopedic office and your appointment is delayed or rescheduled. We would expect that from our drs if it was us or our child in critical condition. The vetinary code of ethics states; " Veterinarians consider patient needs first. Veterinarians must minimize patients' fear while treating disease or injury; in emergencies, veterinarians must provide essential care to save patients or otherwise ease their suffering." The Principles of Vetinarian Medicine, according to the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), The basis of the Principles is the Golden Rule. Veterinarians should accept this rule as a guide to their general conduct, and abide by the Principles." Clearly Deschutes Animal Clinic does not. There are too many excellant, caring and compasionate vets in town to take your pet here. If it is for routine stuff you will probably be satisfied - but god forbid you ever need immediate assistance!
Dr. Castle is my large animal vet and he is just wonderful. He is extremely knowledgeable about goat veterinary medicine, caring, sympathetic, and very competent. I would recommend him to anyone with ruminants.
I love my vet Dr. Kristin Ripka is the best! She saved my dog Elles life when she was very sick. I would highly recommend her! She is very caring and I appreciated that she would call daily during Elles recovery to make sure she was okay.
