I have two rats I adopted from a couple of friends of mine. One of them, Annie, had a host of health problems when I got her. She had a very bad case of bumblefoot and scabs lining her back. At first, I was taking her to the UW Vet Clinic, but it quickly became clear that they knew next to nothing about rats. Healthy Pet Veterinary Clinic is a short walk away from my home, so I decided to get a second opinion there. The clinic is nice and clean. The receptionists are pleasant and welcoming. The vet techs are also pleasant and very eager to help. The vet, Carla Christman, is very knowledgeable about rats and other small animals. She recommended laser treatment for Annie's bumblefoot, and it is close to being completely gone. I am so very happy I decided to switch to this clinic, and I would recommend it to anyone.
Healthy Pet has Moved!! They are now in the little vet clinic next to Hawthorne Branch Library, still on East Washington.
Unprofessional Service. I've lived in Madison for two years. I chose this vet because it had decent reviews and it was close to my home. Every time I've gone there I've come home disappointed. The receptionists and the vet techs have always been very nice and efficient but the two different vets I've used were rude and often left me with more unanswered questions than when I came in. The last time I went in I just went to get heart worm preventative medicine and a vet walked out and started arguing with me over how many I could get and had I really been giving my dog the medication and so forth. My dog is ten this summer- he has always been on preventative medicine- I know how to give it to him and when and I was really offended. I will not be going back to them. I should have listened to my gut instinct the first time and not gone back.
About a month ago, my 15-month old cat was brain damaged after a teeth cleaning, a procedure requiring anesthesia. There is no way to know whether or not the brain damage was a result of human error, but everything about the experience made me realize that I made a big mistake when I took my cat to Healthy Pet. The doctor went ahead with the procedure even though one of their machines to run the blood tests on was broken (she didnt tell me this until I picked him up and asked about the bloodwork). The next day, when it was clear that something had gone very wrong (my cat was blind, stumbling in tight circles, and crying profusely), they refused to see him until 2pm. It took a bit of arguing on my part to even get in that early. Thats when the doctor told me my cat was brain damaged and that she had suspected as much the day before (but hadnt told me this when I picked him up - only that he was abnormally groggy post anesthesia). She went on to tell me that they dont monitor blood pressure during anesthesia and that was possibly the cause of the brain damage. I was absolutely horrified that I had not been notified of this fact prior to the procedure. I would have taken my business elsewhere immediately. I obviously had a lot of questions because I was scared to death about what was happening to my cat, and the doctor didnt seem to have a clue. Every time she offered a suggestion she would second guess herself in the next sentence. There were other things that happened during this situation that caused me to be extremely skeptical about the quality of care Healthy Pet has to offer, but my reason for writing this review is so that other pet owners dont make the same mistake I did. What happened to my cat was horrible, and just the thought that it may have been the result of careless treatment or improper monitoring made it even worse. The doctor referred me to the UW Vet School neurology department and thats where I finally got some answers as to what might have happened to my cat. I have been taking him there ever since, mostly for his mouth condition, and the doctors are so much more knowledgeable and professional than they are at Healthy Pet. My cat was even anesthetized again, this time for a full mouth extraction, without any complications.
I've been to healthy pet a handfull of times and I have always had a great experience. Every person on staff has always been kind and patient from my initial phone call until the appointment itself. I had to take my dog there recently and I want to specifically say that the vet tech named Anna is simply wonderful and Dr. Greenslit is one of the best, most caring and patient vets we've ever had. I have and will continue to highly reccommend healthy pet to others!
