If I could rate this shelter at a NEGATIVE star, I would. After trying to help with fostering dogs, and after explaining that it did not work out for me, OVER 3 people told me that they could not take the dogs back. I was crying, explaining that I can't take on the responsibility anymore. No one helped. After a friend wanted to adopt the dogs but could afford the $250 adoption fee, the shelter said NO. They need to PAY!! I was in a really bad place because of the poor communication and worse management of this shelter. A neighbor who was a police officer eventually took the dogs but was not willing to pay the adoption fee. I believe this shelter cares, but knows money and space for pets is more important than people. PEOPLE LIKE ME! were treated WORSE than an abused dog by these people. MONEY is important. NOT PEOPLE!!

We adopted our wonderful dog from this shelter. They bring their adoptable animals to the Petsmart on the Eastside of Madison and you can't help but fall in love. It was amazing to observe them with other dogs/strangers/kids. Professional and we recommend to others. We absolutely adore our dog and couldn't ask for a better adopting experience.

Wonderful, flexible and fun shelter to work with. We fostered dogs for them for about 10 months. Loved it!

Having volunteered in shelters, and worked with animals all my life, I am an experienced animal owner. I was very disappointed in this shelter, mainly in their communication issues. I told them I would move mountains to adopt a certain dog - they waited until Friday night before the Saturday adoption (when I finally called them after emails all week) to tell me that it wouldn't work out. I am sad, and frustrated. I hope that the animals receive more timely attention.

I think every dog should have a home, so please don't let the low rating discourage you from adopting here. The problem is they mislead me on my adoption of a dog. The older male working the adoption event was very knowledgeable about the dogs and told me of some of their problems. Unfortunately I did not talk to him when I met my future dog. First off, they got the breed wrong. They said she was a mix but she is a pure bred, and not even of the breed they thought she was. Knowing the breed may have helped my decision. The girl working there told me the dog was very smart and always getting out. I thought ok, she's getting out and roaming around or lying on couches. I could handle that. What she neglected to tell me was why she getting out. Severe separation anxiety, and she was probably biting her cages and scratching at doors while there. Something someone with a full time job can't train out of her. Then, when I offered to give her back, they told me they'd euthanize her. I understand that's right for dogs that are dangerous or in pain, but not for something that can be treated and cured with the right care. Knowing her fate at the shelter, I kept her, but it has been extremely hard on me and my dog. So in short, adopt dogs here, but make sure you ask every possible question, because they might not tell you everything if you don't.
